Mi madre, Norma Medel, le diagnosticaron cáncer de mama a principios de 2021 y cáncer de piel ese mismo año. Desde entonces, ha sido una batalla cuesta arriba para ella y mi familia. La había llevado y traído de sus tratamientos de quimioterapia y radioterapia. A pesar de la tensión física, mental y emocional que supuso para ella este diagnóstico, aún así logró tener una sonrisa radiante en su rostro. Mi madre fue descrita como “la vida de la fiesta” y tenía una risa contagiosa. Junto a mí tuvo otros dos hijos: mi hermano mayor, Oscar, y mi hermanita, Monserrat. A pesar de su brillante sonrisa, mi madre no mejoraba. Estos últimos tres meses vimos cómo su cáncer progresaba rápidamente. Tenía una infección de la sangre por la que requirió múltiples transfusiones de sangre. Mi madre permaneció en el hospital durante meses seguidos y requirió atención las 24 horas del día. Cuando mi familia no podía estar cerca de ella, sus hermanos, sobrinos, y amigos nos ayudaron. El mes pasado, mi madre estaba increíblemente frágil y débil. Fue ingresada nuevamente en el hospital donde necesitó una sonda de alimentación. El 3 de junio fue intubada y al día siguiente falleció. Mi familia y yo estamos devastados. Mi padre asumirá toda la responsabilidad de brindarnos estabilidad, amor y apoyo durante este momento increíblemente difícil. Gracias. ENGLISH My mother, Norma Medel, was diagnosed with breast cancer in early 2021 and skin cancer later that year. Since then, it has been an uphill battle for her and my family. My father and I had driven her to and from her chemotherapy treatments and radiation therapy. Despite the physical, mental, and emotional strain this diagnosis was on her, she still managed to have a beaming smile on her face. My mother was described as the “life of the party” and had a contagious laugh. Along with me, she had two other children: My older brother, Oscar, and my little sister, Monserrat. Despite her glowing smile, my mother was not getting better. These last three months we saw her cancer progress quickly. She had a blood infection where she required multiple blood transfusions. My mother stayed in the hospital for months at a time and required around the clock care. When my family could not be around her, her siblings, nieces, and friends devoted their time to her. Last month, my mother was incredibly fragile and weak. She was admitted to the hospital once again where she required a feeding tube. On June 3rd, she was intubated and the next day, she passed away. My family and I are devastated. My father will be taking full responsibility for us to provide stability, love, and care during this incredibly difficult time.
