Welcome to "Sumamos Más por la Conservación de la Naturaleza" ("Together We're More for Nature Conservation"). We are an alliance of dedicated organizations—Unidos Por Animales, Hoja Nueva, and other key allies—working together to address the urgent needs of wildlife across Peru. Our mission is to provide crucial support to struggling zoos and sanctuaries.
Why This Cause Matters
In Peru, there is an ever-growing need to combat the pet trade and wildlife trafficking. While several rescue centers are working tirelessly to rehabilitate and release wildlife, some animals simply cannot be returned to the wild. For these animals, well-run zoos can provide a safe sanctuary. Unfortunately, some have not survived the covid-19 pandemic, and many are barely managing to keep their doors open.
We still maintain our mission of closing down unethical zoos that take advantage of wildlife and support illegal trafficking, but our goal with this project is to provide critical support for struggling zoos and sanctuaries that strive to maintain a high quality of care and adhere to high ethical standards. These types of high quality zoos are a key factor in our long term efforts to combat wildlife trafficking and support conservation.
Our Plan to Make a Difference
This is where our alliance steps in. We’ve created The Sumamos Project to unite our efforts. Our goal is to deliver urgent medical care, implement preventative medicinal protocols, and establish effective rehabilitation and management strategies to support zoos and sanctuaries. We assess animals to determine the best course of action—whether they can be translocated to more specialized centers or reinserted into their natural habitats.
Our pilot mission at the first zoo was a resounding success, demonstrating the effectiveness of our approach. Now, we need your help to expand this effort and reach thousands of animals, supporting the dedicated people who care for them daily.
How Your Donations Will Help
Your donations will primarily fund veterinary supplies and medicine, essential for treating animals in need. Additionally, funds will cover the food and lodging for a small team of 6-8 experts who will visit each zoo or center for several days at a time. Without these resources, our team cannot continue this vital work and reach all of the animals in need.
