It’s quickly become clear to me that aging vehicle is going to need more repairs that I can immediately handle. And while I have plans to make this easier for me in future, at the moment, it’s a huge struggle. Recently, I got the car towed for an electrical issue. The electric mechanic was able to figure out what was keeping the car from starting, and also found the catalytic converter clogged. The fees for diagnostic, labor, and tow came to a total of $849. I got an oil change while the car was there, and my mechanic noticed issues with the suspension control arms and that my break pads will need replacing soon. I had to put those issues on the back burner because at this point I’m late on rent from the first set of repairs and these pending ones will come to over $2000 on their own. On top of that, between being towed twice and taken to two different mechanics, somewhere, my windshield was cracked. And while it is extremely frustrating to have no accountability shown for this, I still need to find a solution. My best option is to pay Safelight $350 to replace the windshield. (And never hand my car over without taking a million photos first again.) I’m asking for $1500 to help me cover the expenses that are beyond what I could pay for myself. I realize that this is the main reason a lot of New Yorkers give up their cars. My current place of work is quite challenging to get to without my car. And I’d like not to lose it, because paying a car note for another car isn’t foreseeable for me. What I CAN say is that I’m currently on a hunt for much better income in the wine industry—work that I’m qualified for and bound to land if I keep searching. Until then, I’ll cycle to work in the warmer months as much as I can and hopefully by winter, I’ll have the kind of income that means I can have a cushion for these types of things.
