Coral communities in Ecuador are in danger, with an estimated 70% loss of this ecosystem's coverage. We urgently need your help!
Hi! We are Andrea and Anni, co-founders of Marine Conservation Ecuador, also known as CONMAR, a non-profit foundation based in Ecuador. Our mission is to restore over 40 hectares of corals that have been lost in our country.
RESTORING OUR CORAL COMMUNITIES IS URGENT.
Not only do 25% of marine species depend on coral reefs (they are lower level in the food chain, providing shelter, food, and breeding and spawning sites for a variety of species), but also the coastal communities of our country depend on coral ecosystems as their main source of economic income (through fishing and tourism) and protein.
We need your help! In 2021, we founded Corallium, the first coral restoration project in continental Ecuador, where we aim to assist in the recovery of this ecosystem using in situ cultivation methodologies through coral nurseries.
With Corallium, we also seek to empower, educate, and train coastal communities in the conservation and restoration of marine ecosystems. Community members are a key pillar of the project. Through our Coral Guardians program, they are trained to carry out maintenance and monitoring activities of the nurseries, providing them with an alternative source of income through conservation.
We need your support to achieve our restoration goal and bring back the important biodiversity our coasts had many years ago.
Corallium has nurseries in two locations within Machalilla National Park: Salango Island and Sucre Islet. Each nursery can hold approximately 800 corals, which are later transplanted to the restoration sites.
Currently, more than 100 square meters are under restoration between Salango Island and Sucre Islet, and the results are promising. The corals have responded positively, which gives us a lot of hope. However, there is still much work ahead that requires significant financial capital.
To achieve our restoration goal, we need to cover the project expenses:
• Salaries for Coral Guardians (community members)
• Materials for nursery installation
• Nursery monitoring and maintenance activities
• Diving and fieldwork equipment
• Boat expenses
• Research
• Training and environmental education in communities
• CONMAR researchers
Thank you for contributing to the protection of these valuable ecosystems and preserving Ecuador's rich marine diversity for future generations.
