Dear Friends and Supporters, We are AFIM (Associação de Ajuda Fraterna à Ilha de Moçambique), a dedicated non-governmental organization that has been serving the Ilha de Moçambique community for over 30 years. Our mission is to provide education and daily nourishment to children in need, fostering hope and opportunity in this historic region. On January 13, 2025, Cyclone Dikeledi made landfall near Nacala, Mozambique, bringing devastating winds and heavy rainfall. The cyclone caused widespread destruction, including the collapse of over 15,000 houses, damage to numerous health facilities, and the destruction of hundreds of schools in the affected districts. The infrastructure has been compromised, classrooms have been destroyed, and essential educational materials have been lost. This tragedy has disrupted the education and daily meals of the children we serve. Our Reach in Remote Communities Beyond the island, AFIM has established nine schools in isolated rural areas of Mozambique, often deep within the African bush. These communities are typically beyond the reach of public education services. Our schools have become vital centres for learning, enabling children to acquire proficiency in Portuguese from a young age. This early education is crucial, as it aligns with the national curriculum and significantly reduces dropout rates in later years. Our Immediate Need The recent cyclone has severely impacted our infrastructure, including our schools in these remote areas. We urgently seek funds to rebuild and restore the services vital to our community.
