Mel’s Story on Channel 10 News San Diego We are raising money to help our friend Melody Jackson recover & rebuild from the January 22, 2024 San Diego flooding, in which she lost everything - her home of 22 years, her car, and her mobile dental hygienist equipment, which is her livelihood. Since the flooding, Mel has relied on friends, family and a hotel voucher provided by the County of San Diego for flood victims, for a place to live. Mel’s Spring Valley street, Broadview Street, was completely devastated by storm waters, which rose quickly and unexpectedly due to clogged storm drains. She and her neighbors were even on the local news. This had never happened before in her neighborhood as she does not live in a flood zone. City workers descended upon the homes in the days following the flood to tear out walls, floors, appliances and cupboards destroyed by the water. Her car was damaged to the point of being totaled. Four months later, Mel’s home remains uninhabitable as she mitigates city and county bureaucracy for rebuilding. Her homeowner’s insurance does not cover “acts of God”, and FEMA assistance was a mere drop in the bucket. Mel was hesitant to accept help from friends and community, but we finally talked her into it. Most of us know Mel from her amazing dance moves, kindness, care for others and positive, fun-loving spirit. Less known is that for 17 years, she has run her own business providing mobile dental cleaning for the underserved in San Diego County (specifically the disabled who are home-bound).
