At the end of 2023, I volunteered in a school called 'CETI', which provides equal education to kids from all backgrounds in Cochabamba, Bolivia. The school is part of a foundation called 'La Casa de los Niños' - a center that provides housing to disadvantaged families.
As the 2nd-poorest country in South America, Bolivia has a high percentage of disadvantaged children, meaning that their poor living conditions impede their ability to thrive and succeed.
About the foundation:
In 1993, a group of friends from Cochabamba joined hands in helping kids with schoolwork. After seeing the poor living conditions of a considerable amount of the kids, they found a piece of land where they would go on to build housing units, and host families without means, families with sick children, and children with disabilities.

After a couple of years, they opened a school on the premises, with the goal of providing equal education to kids from all backgrounds.
The school - CETI:
CETI stands for Centro Educativo Terapéutico Integral. It fulfills its purpose by assigning all young students to their respective age group, mixing children from normal and disadvantaged backgrounds, as well as kids with a learning difficulty or a disability.
Those with special needs spend part of their school day with their classmates, and the other part with a private tutor or in a special therapeutic section.
The result is a harmonious environment where the kids love and accept each other, and treat each other equally.
Unfortunately, their learning environment is missing something that all kids in developed countries have: access to computers.
No access to computers:
Before I travelled to Bolivia, one of my ideas for something extra I could give, was a basic programming class as an afterschool activity, for kids who'd be interested.
But as I would soon learn, the school doesn't have a computer classroom. In addition, households in Bolivia can't afford to own a computer. As a result, the kids don't have any access to computers - neither at school, nor at home - meaning they don't know basic tasks such as how to type or search the internet.
As Bolivia is a poor country, higher education is less accessible; not knowing how to use a computer would make it even harder for a young student to later continue in the academy, and eventually find employment. This is where you come in!
The fund raiser:
With your help, we could install a permanent computer classroom, so that the kids can learn computers as an integrated part of their study schedule. It would give them access to vast educational resources and learning programs, therefore creating a more equal chance to reach their full potential.
The math:
We got offers from a few local PC stores (to support a local business). The best offer for a complete desktop is 380 EUR (PC + monitor + keyboard + mouse), with specifications that would serve for at least 15 years.
Let's do the math: 20 desktops would sponsor 200 kids for 15 years - giving 3000 study-years in total. Therefore:
5 EUR would sponsor 2 study-year, or 2 kids for a year.
12.6 EUR would sponsor 5 study-years, or 5 kids for a year.
38 EUR would sponsor 15 study-years, or 5 kids for 3 years.
114 EUR would sponsor 45 study-years, or 5 kids for 9 years.
380 EUR would get a whole desktop and sponsor 150 study-years, or 10 kids for 15 year.
Full transparency:
On the GoFundMe platform, one cannot select Bolivia as the location of a fund raiser, as it is not currently supported. Therefore, the foundation asked me to host it in Spain, which is where I live. The entirety of the amount raised - whether we reach the goal or not - will be fully given to the foundation at the end of the fund raiser, for the soul purpose of purchasing 20 computers. If any amount is left, the directors shall decide how to use it, for purposes of education.
Whether you donate and/or share on social media - you will make a huge impact on their lives, and the children of 'La Casa de los Niños' will be forever grateful :-)
